[ Ethan Jones ]
[ Merchandising · Spatial Design · Product Development ]

Floors, rooms, and products worked out on paper, then delivered against dates that do not move.

Eight years across retail sales floors, live production, and residential interiors. I am the sole visual merchandiser for Scandinavian Designs Roseville, which means the drawing, the ordering, the install sequence, and the crew on the floor are all mine, and I am the person the sales team comes to when they need to know how a piece is actually built. Before that, four years designing, building, and lighting sets on a weekly production cycle, and two years sourcing and holding vendors to dates on residential projects.

The six projects below are the ones where the thinking showed up in the numbers, from a full store replanned on paper to a product I took from sketch to working prototype.

[ Full Store Floor-Plan System ]

2 to 3 moves a month by hand · 5 to 6 afterStore profits up 10% in year one

Situation

The store had no accurate floor plan. Every reset was worked out by hand, which capped me at two or three rooms a month and made nothing repeatable or handed off.

Brief

Produced an accurate plan of the full sales floor and turned it into a system anyone in the role could work from, not a one-time drawing.

Approach

Hand-measured and drew the entire store over seven months and converted the drawings to a two-plan digital set covering the full sales floor. Every reset since is planned by marking up that set before anything moves, including full-store layouts rather than one room at a time.

Outcome

Monthly floor moves roughly doubled, from two or three planned by hand to five or six planned off the digital set. Store profits rose 10% in my first year, and the plans stay with the store for whoever holds the role next.

[ Portable Campfire ]

2019 prototype · 2022 redesignGas flame to electric heated coils

Situation

Campfires start wildfires, and most portable options are heavy, unstable, or still an open flame. I wanted a fire pit someone could carry to a site, use safely, and pack down without leaving a burn risk behind.

Brief

Design a collapsible fire pit that shuts itself off if tipped or left burning too long, condenses small enough to carry, and still looks like something worth owning.

Approach

Built the 2019 prototype myself, learning welding, brazing, soldering, and circuit programming to get a working gas-fueled flame with a mechanical lid. The body condensed into a cylinder resembling a log, so storage and appearance were solved by the same decision. In 2022 I revisited it, sketching iterations with a metal core and a heat-resistant plastic exterior, and replaced the gas system with electric heated coils.

Outcome

That change cut the fire hazard and the environmental cost, and added a digital timer and a temperature knob, moving the product from mechanical safety features toward control electronics. The concept is lighter and simpler to build, though not yet fabricated. What the project shows is material selection and the iteration between two versions three years apart.

[ Store Resets & Install Execution ]

24 pieces · 3 roomsFinished 1 hr 20 min before the truck

Situation

I am the only visual merchandiser for the store, with no regional visual team above me, and I typically have two or three resets live at once at different stages: one installing, one with product on order, one still being drawn. My install labor is the delivery team, who also run furniture routes, and the truck has no fixed arrival time, so every move is planned against a cutoff I do not control.

Brief

Swapped three rooms into each other in the roughly six hours before the truck landed: a dining collection, an existing bedroom collection, and an incoming bedroom collection, without any one room blocking the next.

Approach

I ordered the five-piece bedroom set a week ahead so it landed the day before the move. Sequenced the swap as a rotation rather than room by room, starting with the small pieces and circling through all three rooms, staging case goods against the walls as they landed, and holding the two bed frames and the dining table for last since those need clear floor. Once every piece was in its correct room, we set final positions.

Outcome

All 24 pieces were placed across three rooms, finished at 12:40 with the truck arriving at 2 pm. Taavi collection sales rose 37.6% after its reset, and three separate customers bought the Hendrick white oak bedroom set complete, every piece exactly as displayed, within two months.

[ Set Design & Event Production ]

4 years of weekly builds15 large seasonal productions

Situation

Weekly services and seasonal productions with fixed air dates that could not move, built by a small crew on a short turnaround.

Brief

Design, build, light, install, and strike sets on a weekly cycle while pre-planning the large seasonal productions months ahead.

Approach

Ran pre-production on Tuesdays and Thursdays covering drawings, materials, lighting plots, and build schedules. Built and installed the sets myself, ran lighting live during services and events, and handled strike and material returns after each run.

Outcome

Four years of weekly productions delivered against unmovable dates, plus 15 large seasonal builds. Nothing shipped late because the plan was finished before the build week started.

[ Sourcing & Vendor Coordination ]

4 multi-month projects · 5 vendors each

Situation

Part-time alongside school, running residential projects with tight and often awkward existing spaces, fixed client budgets, and install dates set by outside vendor lead times.

Brief

Sourced furniture, materials, and custom pieces that fit both the room and the budget, and held vendors to dates that kept installs on schedule.

Approach

Built and managed vendor relationships, collaborated on contracts and pricing, produced spec documentation, and turned out multiple layout variations quickly whenever a space, a budget, or a lead time changed.

Outcome

Four multi-month residential projects delivered on schedule, each coordinated across about five vendors. Awkward and non-standard rooms resolved without custom cost overruns.
